Local 802 of the American Federation of Musicians represents New York CityΓÇÖs professional musical artists. We are the largest local musicianΓÇÖs union in the world. As an organization of professional musicians, we have joined together for the common good of all and for the preservation of the magic of live musical performance.
Our members include the classical musicians of the New York Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and the NYC Opera and Ballet Orchestras. Local 802 represents the talented musicians, conductors, arrangers, orchestrators and copyists who bring to life the marvelous music of Broadway Theatre.
We represent many of the worldΓÇÖs greatest Jazz artists; from the members of the Jazz @ Lincoln Center Orchestra, the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band, the Count Basie Orchestra, and Village Vanguard Orchestra to the many other talented Jazz artists who perform in New YorkΓÇÖs famous clubs.
Local 802 also represents recording musicians and the musicians who perform on television and on film scores. And among our members are the many hundreds of musicians who make our city the live music capitol of the world, where on any night of the year you can hear the greatest in classical, theatre, chamber music, pop, cabaret, rock, Latin, folk, rap, funk, new wave and countless other musical genres.
Local 802, AFM is one of over 300 chartered locals of our parent organization, the American Federation of Musicians, which represents over 100,000 professional musicians in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. The AFMΓÇÖs headquarters is located in New York City. Our union was founded over 100 years ago.
Among the AFMΓÇÖs members are the traveling musicians who, along with local musicians in each city, bring Broadway musicals to theatres across the country. The AFM maintains satellite offices in Los Angeles and in Toronto, where the Canadian section of the AFM is headquartered. The goals of the AFM as set forth in its Constitution are to improve the economic status and general welfare of its members and to encourage, promote, support and develop audiences for the preservation, enjoyment, and appreciation of live musical performance.The AFM is affiliated with the American Federation of Labor - Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO), a federation of national and international unions in the United States and Canada.
